Twin Tiger Shark Twints_01

Twin Tiger Shark is a new JAMMA arcade game on dedicated PCB created by Mikael Tillander. A kickstarter campaign was launched in January and is now complete. The game should be released in December 2021.

Contributors could get various rewards. The biggest is a the JAMMA PCB in a cardboard box, including move strip, manual and flyer and a free ROM upgrade will be provided within the first year after the product ships.

The original Twin Tiger Shark is a game released 7 years ago. The arcade version is a total rework of the game and will be releasing it on a dedicated JAMMA compatible hardware platform designed by Mikael Tillander.

Twin Tiger Shark is a retro inspired shmup like the ones that could be found in the arcades in the late 80s and early 90s. Modern concepts, like auto fire, smaller main player hit box and scoring system, has been adopted for a richer experience.

In total there will be six stages, looping after the first five to then give you the final stage after completing the first loop. First stage looks more or less like the first one in the original, but the enemy patterns and behaviours are all new. Also, the twin bosses on the first stage are totally new as well.

The game uses an 8-way joystick and two action buttons. Pressing Button 1 fires the main shot. No need to mash that button, auto fire is always active. Button 2 fires off a smart bomb that destroys enemy bullets and damages enemies within the explosion area. There is a slight delay between the bomb launch (animation is played) and its detonation, so it's more suited for offensive attacks rather than as a way to escape hairy situations.

There are three types of weapons in the game, forward shots, spread shots and laser. Each has its own weakness and strength depending on the situation. The weapons can be powered up by collecting a P, dropped by the power up dropping planes appearing every now and then. When the maximum power for the main weapon is reached, the looks and behaviour of the weapon drastically changes to become a visually pleasing experience and giving a sense of real power.

Ground targets (tanks and cannons) leave items in the crater they produce when being destroyed. These items (stars, diamonds and more) can be levelled up to become more valuable items, ranging from bronze to gold. The level up is done when collecting a special pickup dropped by enemies at special occasions.

The music will be made by Johan Agurén.

Differences between the arcade and the original version:

Totally Reworked Graphics
Reworked and New Bosses
Reworked and New Enemy Types / Behaviours
Reworked and New Stages
All New Music
Reworked and New Sound Effects
HW Dip-switch Options
Test Menu
No hardware rotation or transparency
4:3 instead of 16:9
Faster gameplay
Totally Rewritten code, from the ground up, to support the unique hardware

Originally, the hardware specifications were to be somewhere between the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis and the SNK Neo Geo systems. But now the processor speed has been bumped to 50MHz.

According to the last project update, the bare bones of the the first three stages in place. Mikael Tillander is fleshing out Stage 1 and 3 and working on the boss for Stage 2.

Here's the latest development progress:

35 PCBs are assembled and fully working.

Attract Mode

We now have the attract mode in, and a working "attract sound" DIP setting for it. Will be revisiting the attract mode demo sequences at the end of the project, since each time I make a gameplay change or enemy behaviour change, the demo sequence gets out of sync. Quite fun watching the poor guy playing the demo go up in smoke in unexpecting moments, though. Smile

Shadows

On the list of feedback from the location test (see way below) was that the game was lacking shadows. I've been on the fence for this since the project started, not thinking the hardware would be up to it. Decided to do a test implementation of the shadows in hardware. Which seems to be working more than ok. So now each sprite only has to set a single bit to make a shadow of it appear on screen! No CPU time taken at all. \o/

Here the shadow of a plane and of a (B) pickup can be seen, during one of the attract demo sequences. The shadows are flickering every other frames as well, giving it a transparency effect.

My test-TV broke the other day as well, so I had to change it to another one. This TV has some serious overscan issues, way more than the one before.

Stages

A barebone of the final stage is now up and running! Having so much fun with that, too bad not many of you get to see it. Smile

Fun with Bonus

Got some between stage art drawn and implemented into the game. Getting the bonus round up is so much more fun now. A side effect (read: bug) had the hidden stages have this as well, which it shouldn't. Decided to fix that with ugly code. I'll come back and fix it if I feel I have the time. It's well documented so it shouldn't pose any issues in the future. Famous last words.

Used ROM Space

"Thanks" to the fun with bonus images, we now have a larger increase in the code/gfx ROM. Smile

- Code and graphics: 4.8 / 16 MB.
- Audio: 2.8 / 16 MB.

A Twin Tiger Shark update is available:

ROM v1.5 (2023-01-28) Changes:

  • Cosmetic: Redrawn enemies, recolored tiles and stuff like that for you to discover.
  • New enemies: Several new ones have been added. Some replace old ones for the first loop, as well.
  • Difficulty: Insane is now gone. Replaced with Easy.
  • Balancing: The lightning weapon power has been significantly reduced. Also several enemies have had their initial amount of energy changed.
  • Score: The value of the diamonds in the secret areas has been increased and a few enemies have had their score values changed.

An upgrade PCB was sent to the backers who had chosen the "ROM Upgrade option", it has to be plugged into the game PCB.
Others were given instructions on how to perform the upgrade themselves (a Raspberry Pi and some connector wires are needed).
